Vrindavan

On the eastern bank of the Yamuna
are five forests called

Bhadravana,
Bilvavana (Belvan),
Lohavana (Lauhavana),
Bhandiravana and
Mahavana.

On the western side of the Yamuna
are seven forests which are:

Madhuvana,
Talavana,
Kumudavana,
Bahulavana,
Kamyavana,
Khadiravana, and
Vrindavana.

Of the 12 main forests, the forest of Vrindavana is considered the most important. These 12 forests are visited on Braja Mandala parikrama.

This is similar to the twelve cantos of the SRIMAD BHAGAVATAM which are compared to the different parts of Krishna's transcendental form.

First and second cantos are Krishna's lotus feet;
Third and fourth--Krishna's thighs;
Fifth—Krishna's chest;
Seventh and eighth--Krishna's arms;
Ninth-Krishna's neck;
Tenth—Krishna's smiling face;
Eleventh-Krishna's forehead;
Twelfth-Krishna's crown.

Then there are The 24 Upa-Vana are:-

Gokula,
Govardhana,
Varsāna,
NaṅdaGrāma,
Saṅketa,
Paramadra,
Aḍīnga(Aringa),
Sessai,
Mat,
Unchagram,
Kelavana,
Śrī Kuṇḍa,
Gandharvana,
Parsoli,
Bilchhu,
Bacchavan,
Ādibadri,
Karahla,
Ajnokh,
Pipāṣa-Vana (Pisaya),
Kokilāvana,
Dadhigrāma,
Kotavana, and
Rāvala.

This is the place where Sri Krishna rested after performing Kalinga nardanam. During the lila with the snake Kalinga, Sri Krishna had to be inside the Yamuna river for long times because of the fact that his body became very chill. So, after enacting this lila of controlling the garva of Kalingan snake, he went above a small hill. In order to serve their master, 12 Sooriyas descended to that place and helped Sri Krishna’s body get warm. This is the reason behind this place being called Dwadasa Aditya Tila. Dwadasa = 12 Aditya = Sooriya. It so happened that Sri Krishnas’ body started sweating with the sudden heat and this sweat has become a small “Prascanda Theerta”
